Foreword
I would like to express our great pleasure that we can announce the opening of the series of exhibition, Modern Artist, in the Fukuoka Asian art museum. It is a series to introduce the process of modern Asian art development through their encounters with western modern art fromthe end of the 19th to the first half of the 20th century.
The first exhibition takes up Affandi who left the brilliant tracks in Indonesia art history. In the rapid changing period when Indonesia was striving for their independence, Affandi created modern paintings taking his subject matters in his own daily life and expressed his emotion and spirit, which is greatly different from idealized landscape paintings made for Western exoticism. With 24 works from his early days to establishment if his original exprssionistic style with swirling tropical energy. It aims at tracing the track of Affandi who lived his lived his life in a tumultuous period of time with painting as a way of expressing.
