WHAT IS A SERIGRAPHY

Serigraphy or Print Making, has a rich history as both a means of graphic production and of making original works of art. Serigraphy is not unknown in Indonesia as the process has been popular here for commercial painting for ages. Some artist have used it as a new art form, but in the hands of an artist like Affandi, the ancient art takes on an extraordinary colour. The process was refined by various cultures and experiments in using silk cloth as a screen were first performed in Germany and France in 1870 when a multi-colour method was developed in San Fransisco in 1914. The process becomes popular for commercial printing and also as a new art form. It was Carl Zigrosser author of prints at the philadelphia Museum of art who first used the therm serigraphies as an original print created by an artist from the artist own designer. It was a modern artist like Andy Wahrol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Robert Rausenberg. Who used serigraph for creating great comositions that continue to amaze both viewers and aspiring artist to this day.
