AFFANDI'S NUDES OF EROTIC INSPIRATION | |
When the writer
K.Mihardja visited Affandi in his house in Jakarta Javastreem in
Menteng, he was shocked to see Affandi's nude paintings
featuring Maryati, Affandi's wife. Affandi replied to him
launghing,'But we were born naked, weren't we? What could be
more natural and pure than a nude human being completely
uncovered.' Affandi who in the begin of his carrier as a
proffesional painter lived in a bamboo house 'Rumah Bilik'
worked half time as a billboard painter for movies and ticket
collector at the Elita, Orion and Luxor movie theaters. The
family's economy did not permit to hire any model, so he asked
his wife to pose for him. |

Affandi did not want to paint a nude
for the mere sake of showing the beauty of a woman's body and
nothing more what he wanted was the depiction of a nude woman,
that could proud it a dramatic tention and in which the viewer
could grasp some traces of the tragedy of human life. Regarding
he theme of human beings in my paintings, I am only interested
in subjects that tell me there stories Affandi said, take for
instance his nude entitled 'Fat and Broken' 1947. For which he
wrote an handwritten note 'Oleh karena sukar mendapatkan
nude+model yang baik untuk kepentingan latihan kita di pelukis
rakyat, terpaksa hanya bisa mendapatkan model prostitute yang
sudah rusak, sudah tidak laku lagi pada orang lelaki. Diluar dia
kelihatan gemuk, tapi dalam sudah rusak, rongsok. Nasib seorang
wanita...' All his life Affandi painted nudes, but never
abondoned there empathic attitude toward suffering people. |

Take
striptease scene in Baltimore (1962) depict not the sexiness of
the body, but rather the miseriable life of the stripper. It is
not nakedness it self that features most prominently in
Affandi's nude. His first nude painting Affandi did sell during
his exhibition in Banda Aceh 1977, was a nude painted in
Tawangmangu, the buyer was an Islamic Scholar (Kyai) by the name
of Hambali. Affandi's erotic works of sexual intercourse reveal
the artist's characteristic attitute so intensly maintained
throughout his carreer the strong pyschic connections to the
artist himself,' The helpless people in the street, like the
prostitutes, powerless in there tragic life tortured and
suffering from others, greed and lust'. This erotic paintings
are full of passions and emotions, nature and rich with
experiences and able to convey them as tonnagely so that his
works feel deep and touching. |
